my first rejection email

Hi, Sue.

Thank you for sending your work, which I really did enjoy reading.

Because the volume of work received (over 1,000 poems) far exceeds the
space available in the Poetry While You Wait book, I have had to make
difficult decisions regarding which poems among so many fine ones to
include.

I am sorry to say that we will not be able to include your work.

Please do, though, keep writing and supporting poetry in our community.

Sincerely,

Aaron Anstett

Man, I hate rejection letters (but who loves them?). They're wrong Sue! Your writing is so good, you should definitely keep going. Didn't some famous author make a book out of his rejection letters? Save this one and we can turn it into a peace crane. xoxoxo, d

When I was writing poetry back in the '70's I sent out reams of poems to publishers and literary magazines. The ratio for getting something published was about 25 to 1. You never get used to them but you learn to accept them.

Later, when I edited a small magazine, I realized that you can only read so many poems before your mind fries. It has more to do with attention span than the quality or lack thereof of any poem...

Oh, oh, oh, I'm into the double digits in rejection letters now. Take heart. JA Konrath spoke at Off Campus Writers Workshop last year and told us that, while he has had nine novels published, he has also garnered more than 600 rejection letters. I'd say we both have a ways to go before we reach our quota. Good luck.
