notes on a theme, pt. 2: or fear

or fear
orpheus
oh furious
need! most paralyzing fear of abandoment
complacency: the fear of taking a risk, making a stand, putting our fate in our own hands
ego is fear becoming beautifully self-aware and tragically self-criticial
aggression spins our fear beyond our locus of control
envy, well,.... her friend is always more afraid than she is herself, only she cannot see it.
desire is our fear of dancing at a party we didn't want to attend, alone in a room full of strangers, painfully aware of our shoes
fear is around us, beyond us, behind us, and in us,
a sure bet
But I always cheer for the underdog, the sheer impossibility, the come-from-behind, the lost, the lenten vow
so
fear is impossible
not even of death
or dogs

-inspired by Marina Zurkow's Nicking the Never, now in Coburn Gallery in the Worner Center, Colorado College, until April 12th. Promise me that you will go.

notes on a theme

sometime life throws a theme
our way
too big to ignore
like family or loss or choices or nothingness
the ability to see one's kismet clearly
is given to none
yet we who can bear witness to life's
synchronicity
will find something there to make waking up
tomorrow
worth going to bed
even the past
is subject to interpretation

a book I just read:

some grafitti I just found:

a play I just saw:
EDMUND: The base shall to th' legitimate. I grow;
I prosper; Now gods, stand up for bastards!

for john part 2

I know this is old news, and the Richard Dawkins documentary "The God Delusion" came out awhile back. But, hey, I didn't know how to blog then, so I didn't know how to share it with you all. This is simply part three of a four part series. I know the raving wacko Ted show is hard to stomach, but wait 'til the last couple of minutes and you'll see.....my husband, John Spengler! (They spelled his name "Spangler", only mildly annoying given the circumstances). I was there, i shook his hand, I talked to The Man, I chatted with his film crew. This ranks as one of those WOW moments of my life!

valentine for the world

Love is the flower of life, and blossoms unexpectedly and without law, and must be plucked where it is found, and enjoyed for the brief hour of its duration.

for john

"doing what little one can to increase the general stock of knowledge is as respectable an object of life, as one can in any likelihood pursue"

HAPPY BDAY MR. DARWIN!

"Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science."

caepa rendezvous

I went to a conference at a big hotel surrounded by big streets and a big shopping mall that served big meals. I learned some interesting things (did you know you can make a crossword puzzle with excel?), and I listened to some crap (If she says "Part/Whole" one more time I am going to fucking LOSE IT!!). I danced to a really cheesy rock band called "The Strolling Scones" that played covers of every predictable song. It was, I guess you would say, business as usual as far as conferences go.
BUT
I heard a man speak named Dr. Chuck Luna. He is the co-director of the Rocky Mountain Intercultural Institute He was passionate and inspiring and understands the lives of real people. After his address, I wanted to ask him to run for president. He said the only really thought-provoking thing I heard in those two days: "A junior in high school right now will have an average of 12-16 careers in his or her lifetime........4 of them don't even exist yet."

camille

"It does not require belief to be moved by religious sculpture"
-Camille Paglia, Colorado College, Feb. 6, 2007

I have been brought to my knees by Michelangelo's La Pieta. I have stared in awe at his David. I have lain on the floor of the Sistine Chapel and cried. I know what it means to be moved by religious iconography and still be an athiest. Yes, we need Art History and Religious History in this country, because.....

If you don't get this:

Then you won't get this:

However, her lecture fell short of achieving my expectations (perhaps because they were too high?). Or perhaps because I cannot accept the idea that we need a modern confluence of art and religion in order for there to be a resurgence of meaningful art. So much religious art and architecture of the past was paid for with the blood, sweat, and tears of the established churches' artists/slaves, and the money they brought in from the poor villagers they were trying to influence.

That said, I still thank Camille for "resurrecting" a pleasant memory: turning hymns back into drinking songs. Since Martin Luther took German drinking songs and turned them into hymns for the masses, we used to have a good time turning them back 'round again.

For some truly brilliant Camille Commentary, please visit my brilliant friend Klayton.

This is what my friends and I would have made in the late 80's, had we youtube, and had we not been so busy typing our religious studies term papers on typewriters.
